The Flower Journal · At home with autumn
When the clocks go back, bring a little colour home.
Warm colours, thoughtful gestures and flowers that make the shorter days feel a little brighter.

The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, and with them comes that familiar shift: curtains drawn earlier, lamps switched on before tea and a little more time spent indoors. Here in Nottingham, autumn is settling into its richest colours. It is a lovely moment to bring some of that warmth home.
A vase of fresh flowers can give a room a new focal point. By the front door, beside your favourite chair or on the table for a slow Sunday lunch, a few thoughtfully chosen blooms make everyday spaces feel cared for.
The seasonal palette
Choose colours you want to come home to
Take your cue from the season. Burgundy and deep red feel rich and inviting, while orange and golden yellow bring a bright splash of colour to a grey afternoon. For something gentler, peach and cream sit beautifully alongside warm wood, soft fabrics and a favourite ceramic vase.
You do not need to match everything in the room. Pick out one shade from a cushion, a picture or the view beyond the window, then let your flowers bring their own character. A simple vase gives petals, foliage and all those small details room to shine.
Small touches. Everyday pleasure.
Find a spot where you will enjoy them
A hallway arrangement offers a cheerful welcome each time you step inside. On a side table, flowers can turn an overlooked corner into somewhere your eye naturally rests. Beside a reading chair, they become part of the pleasure of settling down with a book.
For the dining table, think about the people around it. A lower arrangement leaves room for conversation across Sunday lunch, and a smaller vase can be moved easily when the serving dishes arrive. Give the flowers a little breathing space rather than squeezing them between everything else.
For the joy of giving
Take a little autumn with you
If someone else is cooking this weekend, flowers make a thoughtful thank you. Choose colours you can picture in their home, and add a card with a few words that sound like you. A simple “Thank you for having us” is often all it takes.
There does not have to be an invitation or a special occasion, either. A bouquet sent to a friend, a relative or someone you have been meaning to catch up with can say, “You crossed my mind today.” And choosing flowers for your own home is just as good a reason.
A florist’s finishing touch
Keep cosy rooms comfortable for flowers, too
As the heating comes on, give your bouquet a spot away from radiators, fires and other sources of direct heat. Begin with a clean vase, remove any leaves below the waterline and follow the instructions on the flower food. Check the water regularly and refresh it as needed.
